Keep Hydro Public begins radio campaign

A group of labour unions, community groups and student organizations called Keep Hydro Public has begun an online and radio advertising campaign opposing the intent of the Ontario government to sell 60% of public utility company Hydro One. The 30-second radio commercial will run for two weeks. It focuses on the potential negative consequences of the sale. The online component will begin later this week. The campaign is accompanied by a website at <http://www.keephydropublic.ca>.

"Today, three out of four Ontarians with an opinion on privatizing Hydro One are opposed to this sell-off," said Katrina Miller, a spokesperson for Keep Hydro Public. "They fear it will lead to higher costs, to less reliable service, and they are concerned about the lack of transparency in this process. The government is making this decision to sell it off, in haste and largely behind closed doors, without providing Ontario residents a meaningful opportunity to have their voices heard on such a fundamental issue. We are telling the government to keep hydro public."
