Mattel begins Barbie Business Bursary contest

Toy company Mattel has begun an initiative in Canada called the "Barbie Business Bursary" to coincide with the launch of its Entrepreneur Barbie doll. Until Sept. 1, consumers can nominate a young entrepreneur under the age of 18 at <http://www.barbie.com/mydreams>. Entries must include a description of the nominee's entrepreneurial dream. The company will select ten entries and post video profiles of them online. A judging panel will then choose three winners, who will each receive $2,500 in funding for their business plans.

As part of the launch of Entrepreneur Barbie, Mattel Canada has also named Erica Diamond to the position of chief inspiration officer. Diamond is the founder and editor-in-chief of Montrel-based Womenonthefence.com. She will lead the contest's judging panel.

"Mattel has always encouraged children to think big, and the Barbie Business Bursary presents the perfect opportunity for Canadian children to make their business dream a reality," said Diamond. "Barbie was always there for me as a role model when I was a child. She inspired me to dream big and be fearless, and today, I'm living out those dreams. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and to make a difference and help other women and girls do the same. The Barbie Business Bursary is an important initiative that recognizes and rewards young entrepreneurs and invests in our leaders of tomorrow."
