Tema Conter Memorial Trust readies PTSD awareness tour

The Toronto-based Tema Conter Memorial Trust is preparing a traveling initiative called the "Heroes Are Human PTSD Awareness Tour." The effort will work to raise awareness of posttraumatic stress disorder among members the Canadian military as well as public safety, emergency and correctional personnel.

During the tour, Canadians who have endured PTSD will describe their personal experiences at a national series of 48 public events hosted by actor Enrico Colantoni. The initiative will begin in St. John's, NL on May 5 and end in Toronto on July 18. It is being supported with a website at <http://www.2014heroestour.com>.

"These men and women see tragic events every day," said Vince Savoia, executive director of the trust. "They witness human suffering up close and it sometimes becomes very difficult to cope with the aftermath. Smells, sounds and reliving witnessed events create lasting painful memories that sometimes haunt these men and women for life."

The tour will be sponsored by Medavie EMS, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, the Ontario Provincial Police Association, Ambulance Paramedics of British Columbia, CUPE 873, InterContinental Hotels Group, Fines Ford Lincoln Sales and North City General Insurance.
