Credit unions conduct Ding Free promotion

Credit Union Central of Canada conducted a street promotion called "Ding Free Day" yesterday. Promotional workers in nine cities distributed $25,000 in two-dollar coins to pedestrians to raise awareness of the typical cost of a bank's ATM fee. The national promotion encouraged consumers to avoid getting "dinged" by these fees by joining a credit union. The initiative took place in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax. In addition, participating credit unions will donate two dollars to charity for each credit union member who downloads a smartphone application from . The promotion is part of a larger marketing effort begun last year by Credit Union Central of Canada with the participation of the National Credit Union Marketing Advisory Committee. The marketing program was developed by Central 1 Credit Union and creative agency Dead Famous. "With the Ding Free campaign, we're informing Canadians that as credit union members, they can do their banking at a participating credit union ATM without getting 'dinged,' and these charges can really add up over time." said David Phillips, president and CEO of Credit Union Central of Canada. "From sea to sea, many Canadians got a toonie for free today. It's just a fun way of highlighting the benefits they can expect from credit union membership, including exceptional service and competitive rates." Credit Union Central of Canada is the national trade association for the Canadian credit union system. Central 1 is the central financial facility and trade association for the B.C. and Ontario credit union systems. The Credit Union Central of Canada "Ding-Free Day" street promotion was coordinated by Newad.
