IBM OPENS ON-LINE LABORATORY

U.S.-based International Business Machines Corp. is letting Internet users taste a bit of new software still under development. The company launched alphaWorks yesterday, a combined on-line laboratory and Web site that will provide Internet users and software developers with free access to advanced software technologies. Located at <http://www.alphaWorks.ibm.com>, alphaWorks gives visitors the chance to preview, use and experiment with next-generation Internet technologies still under development. These include sophisticated Java programming tools and simple applets. The site now includes six emerging developments: the Applet Development Kit for Windows 3.1, Bamba, NetRexx, PanoramIX, ShockAbsorber and WBI. IBM plans to add to that list each week. The next additions will take place during a special "Java Week" in the beginning of September, which will feature at least three new Java-based technologies. AlphaWorks also includes Perspectives, a collection of commentary from IBM programmers, developers and scientists.
