MOST ITEMS BOUGHT AT SUPERMARKET, SURVEY SAYS

Canadians purchase twice the number of items at supermarkets than at mass merchandisers, but in terms of dollars spent, club stores lead the way, according to ACNielsen of Markham, Ont. For the 36 weeks ending March 4, consumers bought an average of 12.6 items per visit at grocery stores and spent $34 per visit. They bought 11.5 items at club stores and spent an average of $89. At mass merchandisers they spent $33 and bought six items. In addition, they bought 4.1 items at drug stores, spending $18 dollars, and bought 2.7 items at convenience stores spending $10.
