HEATHY PASTA IMAGE INCREASES SALES

Pasta is gaining popularity because it is now seen as a healthy food instead of just a belly-stuffer, according to a study by Find/SVP of New York. Sixty-four per cent of the U.S. pasta manufacturers surveyed said that pasta's healthfulness is responsible for its popularity. The most important trend in new pasta products in recent years is the introduction of new healthy pastas including those containing all-natural ingredients such as organically grown wheat, whole-grain flour and exotic grains. Another important trend is the introduction of flavored pastas. Forty-five per cent of respondents said these were best sellers. Flavors include pepper, herbs and spices, spinach, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes. Pasta chips are also gaining popularity in the snack food category. Chip flavors on the U.S. market include barbecue, cookie, urban garlic, India curry and Roman bruschetta.
