Torstar, CanWest, Metro launch Metro Vancouver
By Adnews Staff
Torstar, CanWest MediaWorks and Metro International have formed a new joint venture to publish English-language free daily newspapers in a number of Canadian cities. Each company will own a third of the operation. The first product of the venture is Metro Vancouver, which launched today. The commuter paper will be distributed through a street sampling program and through 2,500 boxes in transit stops, university campuses and business districts. The daily distribution in the Greater Vancouver Area will initially be 145,000. The three companies plan to create Metro editions in additional cities, but no details are currently available. Torstar and Metro already jointly own Metro Toronto. Metro Montreal is owned by Metro, Transcontinental and Gesca.
