AMERICANS EXERCISING AT HOME

Fitness equipment is increasingly going into homes rather than gyms, according to a study by Find/SVP of New York. The research company came to this conclusion because 86% of the $3.7 billion in fitness equipment sales last year were retail. In 1990, 83.1% of sales were retail. Aerobic riders made up the fastest-growing product segment, followed by slide boards, cross-country ski machines, treadmills, home gyms, weight benches, stair climbing machines and free weights. RSVP says in-line skating, team sports, aqua-exercising, martial arts, cardioboxing and wall climbing are all currently fashionable, while rowing machines and high-impact aerobics are on the way out.
