CRTC APPROVES NEW EAST COAST RADIO STATIONS

Toronto-based Rogers Media, a division of Rogers Communications, has received licences from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for three new FM radio stations in Halifax, NS, and New Brunswick cities Moncton and Saint John. The stations will broadcast local news, weather, traffic and community events, plus sports programming and call-in shows. According to Rogers, the stations will be operational in 2005.
In related news, CanWest Global Communications subsidiary Global Communications has also received a licence from the CRTC for a new FM radio station in Halifax. The station, which will be called The Breeze, will have an easy listening music format encompassing the soft contemporary, Celtic, folk, blues, jazz and world beat genres. The station will be operated by CanWest MediaWorks.
