U.S. ADS TO REMAIN ON U.S. CHANNELS IN CANADA

An application by Toronto-based 49th Media to substitute U.S. advertising with Canadian ads on U.S. channels available in Canada has been returned. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, which considered the application incomplete, returned it with no decision earlier this month. 49th Media submitted the proposal in June. In September the commission said the application did not include evidence of the permission or support of U.S. broadcasters. 49th Media responded in October with letters summarizing its discussions with U.S. broadcasters. The CRTC concluded that the letters did not provide evidence of permission or support of the U.S. broadcasters. In related news, the commission has also turned down an application by the Canadian Cable Television Association that requested U.S. stations including HBO, ESPN and Fox News be authorized for distribution in Canada.
