CANWEST TO START CHARGING FOR NEWSPAPER WEBSITE ACCESS

CanWest Global Communications of Winnipeg will begin charging readers to view its newspaper content online this fall, according to media reports. The paid online subscription service will begin in November. CanWest owns the National Post as well as the Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, Vancouver Sun and Regina Leader-Post. Content from those publications is currently available for free at the canada.com Web site. "There's no point in having canada.com with 120 million page-views a month if nobody is paying for it," said CanWest chief executive Leonard Asper in the reports. "If we lose page-views, fine. But either way people are going to start to have to pay for newspapers."
