COMPAQ GETTING MORE STUDIOUS

U.S.-based Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston is going after a bigger chunk of the U.S. education market. The computer maker is launching two new Presario models geared to the school market, ranging in price from $2,049(US) to $2,699. They will be sold with one of 11 different bundles of software aimed at different grade levels. Compaq would neither confirm nor deny if it has plans to take the same approach in Canada. "This is a U.S. initiative. At this point and time it is not taking place in Canada," is the only comment that marketing communications manager Anne Sauvé would make yesterday. Compaq is the world's top-selling personal computer maker. However, schools surveyed by Quality Education Data of Denver indicated they would only buy about 7% of their computer equipment from Compaq this year. Apple Computer came out on top in this study with a 61% score and International Business Machines Corp. was second with 17%. While the education market is small it primes the pump. Kids get used to a certain type of computer at school, and that influences what their parents buy for the home.
