PROVIGO STOPS GIVING NUMBERS TO NIELSEN

Quebec-based grocery retailer Provigo Inc. will no longer provide sales data to A.C. Nielsen. The last report period from the company will be the four weeks ending March 2. "We don't want to communicate our internal information to anyone," executive vice-president Michel Tremblay told Adnews this week. "We don't want our numbers spread around. It's a change of philosophy." When asked if Provigo will still subscribe to Nielsen to get data from other companies, Tremblay replied that he couldn't say right now because he didn't know if his company would need it. Provigo has sales of $5.5 billion annually. The company operates over 1,100 stores in Quebec and Ontario. Its banners include Provigo, Maxi, Loeb, Axep, Govi, Inter Marché, Proprio and Provisoir.
