TECHNOLOGY COMPANY HIRES COHEN

General DataComm Ltd. of Toronto is using a PR agency for the first time. The company has been in Canada since 1973, selling modems to phone companies and networking products to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The Cohen Group of Toronto was hired without a review late last month, on the strength of work it has done for other clients, marketing director John Hanton told Adnews yesterday. GDC decided to hire a PR firm because "now we have new multimedia products and we felt we needed to heighten our profile," Hanton said. The company also sells low-cost modems to consumers and interactive multimedia video products, along with its other modems and networking products. GDC doesn't advertise in Canada. It relies on spillover of advertising done by its U.S. parent company in Middlebury, Connecticut.
