INDEPENDENT FILM CHANNEL TO SPONSOR TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL AWARD

Alliance Atlantis Communications' Independent Film Channel Canada will sponsor a new award that will be presented as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. The "Independent Film Channel Visions Award" will be presented annually to a filmmaker whose work has been selected for the festival's Visions program. This new program promotes films that, according to the festival, explore new cinematic territory, use unusual methods of storytelling or employ new technologies in distinctive ways. The 2002 award will be bestowed by a three-person jury consisting of Alison Maclean, writer and director of Crush and Jesus' Son, Whit Stillman, writer, producer and director of films Barcelona, Metropolitan and Last Days of Disco, and Wayne Clarkson, executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, The $20,000 prize will be presented at the annual awards brunch on Sept. 15. The Toronto International Film Festival will run from Sept. 5 to 14.
