ANTI-IDLING CAMPAIGN BEGINS TWO-WEEK TEST RUN
By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Petroleum Products Institute and the Government of Canada have begun a two-week pilot project in Mississauga. The intention of the anti-idling campaign is to remind drivers to turn off their cars if they are stopped for more than 10 seconds. Approximately 50 Esso, Petro-Canada, Shell, Sunoco and Canadian Tire gasoline stations in the city are participating in the campaign. Banners and signage at the stations convey the anti-idling message. Additional campaign materials include information cards, vehicle window stickers and air fresheners. Radio, newspaper and transit shelter advertising will also be used. Student "ambassadors" will visit participating stations to distribute materials and answer questions. According to Bob Clapp, vice-president of the Ontario division of the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute, the campaign will also be tested in Quebec City in the fall and in Vancouver next spring before being rolled out nationally in the summer of 2003. The government is contributing $150,000 to the campaign.
