WORKPLACE SAFETY BOARD BREAKS AWARENESS EFFORT

The Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board is breaking an eight-week workplace safety awareness effort. The campaign makes use of the "Safety Starts with You" message introduced in 1999. Also returning this year are a number of "prevention ambassadors" or individuals who have been personally affected by a workplace injury or death. Television, radio, newspaper and transit advertising as well as theatre ads and shopping mall posters will present these six people telling their story and delivering a message of workplace safety. The ads will also display a toll-free number employers and workers can call to get information, ask questions or raise concerns about an unsafe workplace. "We are committed to changing public attitudes and behaviours," said Roy Mould, vice-president of prevention for the WSIB. "We want everyone to believe, as we do, that work-related injuries, illness and deaths are totally unacceptable and totally preventable." Advertising was created by Toronto's Fuel Advertising. Public relations are being handled by Edye Rome Communications Services, also of Toronto.
