SECOND CUP EYEING BOOKSTORE CHAIN
By Adnews Staff
Second Cup Ltd. of Toronto could be the third shareholder in Borders Canada. The specialty coffee retailer is having discussions with U.S.-based Borders about investing $2 million in the latter's Canadian bookstore chain which is awaiting regulatory approval. Second Cup may operate cafes in Borders Canada stores. Second Cup's U.S. subsidiary, The Coffee Plantation, has cafes in two Borders stores, one in Tuscon, Arizona and the other in Austin, Texas. Two confirmed Canadian investors are former Cott Corp. president Heather Reisman and Toronto bookseller Ed Borins. Borders Canada will decide whether to hire a Canadian ad agency in the new year. Borins told Adnews in an interview earlier this month that the investors would like to hear from Canadian agencies.
