CANWEST CUTS NATIONAL POST STAFF
By Adnews Staff
CanWest Global Communications has cut 120 jobs at its National Post newspaper in an effort to reduce debt and accelerate growth. Also gone is Saturday Night Magazine, the weekly magazine previously distributed in the newspaper's Saturday issues. CanWest, which announced the cuts on Monday, said much of the magazine's material will be incorporated into the newspaper's weekend edition which will debut a redesign on October 6. According to media reports, the paper is also discontinuing Post TV and reducing its arts, sports, lifestyle and Toronto news coverage. CanWest acquired full ownership of the National Post last month when it picked up the 50% it did not own from Hollinger Inc. Winnipeg-based CanWest said the changes being made at the newspaper are in line with those planned while it was under Hollinger management.
