GTA COMMUTERS GET NEW TRANSIT NEWSPAPER

Transit commuters in the Greater Toronto Area will have something new to read as of June 29: GTA Today. Torstar Corporation is bringing this free daily transit publication to the Toronto market. The concept and masthead were unveiled yesterday at a news conference at Toronto's Union Station. GTA Today will be distributed in purple newspaper boxes at subway, bus, and Go stations as well as bus and streetcar stops throughout the GTA. The paper will be printed in tabloid format, run 24 to 32 pages in length, and target a different demographic than Torstar's other publications. "Research shows that fewer than 50% of young working commuters are regular readers of daily newspapers," said John Honderich, Toronto Star publisher and president of Trostar Media Group. "GTA Today will provide this untapped segment of the population with a specialized publication that appeals to their lifestyle." The free daily transit newspaper concept has been in existence in Europe for at least four years, with similar publications in London, Stockholm, Budapest, Prague and the Netherlands. GTA Today will be available five days a week.
