UNILEVER MAKES BEST BUY

Consumer products company Unilever with corporate offices in London, England and Rotterdam, Netherlands, has announced a deal to acquire international food company Bestfoods, based in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Unilever will pay US$73 per share for a total price of US$20.3 billion for Bestfoods, who's portfolio of brands includes: Hellmann's mayonnaise, Skippy peanut butters, Knorr soups and Thomas' English muffins. The deal is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2000. Unilever is best known for its Lipton tea, Ben & Jerry's and Magnum ice cream and Dove personal wash brands.
