BELL CANADA LOGS ON WWW WITH LYCOS

Montreal-based Bell Canada and Web media company Lycos, Inc. of Waltham, Mass. have announced the creation of a new Internet company called Sympatico-Lycos. As part of the agreement, Bell Canada will invest CAN$37 million in the new company gaining majority ownership. Separately, Bell ActiMedia, a subsidiary of Bell Canada, and Lycos signed a CAN$60 million multi-year distribution agreement. Under the terms of that agreement, Bell products and services will be promoted to U.S. Lycos network users accessing the network from Canada. The Lycos network includes: HotBot, Wired News, Webmonkey and Hot Wired. The new Sympatico-Lycos site will launch in May and be powered by Lycos. The site will offer Canadians one source for both business and consumer needs. Marc Tellier will head up the new company as president and CEO. Tellier is formerly vice president, new media alliances, Bell ActiMedia. Tellier will be joined by senior executives from both Lycos and Bell ActiMedia to form the management team for the new Internet company.
