CRTC NOT REGULATING THE INTERNET
By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission has announced it will not regulate new media services on the Internet. The announcement made yesterday by the CRTC follows a review under the Broadcasting Act and the Telecommunications Act that began last July. The results of that review concluded the "new media on the Internet are achieving the goals of the Broadcasting Act and are vibrant, highly competitive and successful without regulation". The CRTC went on to further say, it is "concerned that any attempt to regulate Canadian new media might put the industry at a competitive disadvantage in the global marketplace". CRTC chairperson Francoise Bertrand said the CRTC is one of the first regulators in the world to clarify its position on the Internet. "Our position is clear. We are not regulating any portion of the Internet," he said. Copies of the CRTC's documents are available through its Internet site at <http://www.crtc.gc.ca> or from any CRTC office.
