CRTC AM RADIO HEARINGS

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is holding public hearings this week to consider five applications for licences to operate on the available AM frequencies in Montreal. There are two positions on the AM dial available: 690 and 940, which were recently vacated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. when it moved to the FM dial. There are five applications being heard. Metromedia has applied to amend the broadcasting licenses of two of its radio stations: CKVL in Verdun and CICQ in Montreal. It has asked to change the frequency of CKVL from 850 to 690 AM. The station would then provide a French-language all-news service for the Montreal region. In addition, Metromedia wants to change the frequency of CKCQ Montreal from 600 to 940 AM to offer a similar service in English. Radio Nord has applied for two broadcasting licences: one for an English-language country music station and the other for a French-language country music station. Radio-Canada has applied to use 690 AM to create a third French-language public radio station. It would be called Info-Radio and would provide an all-news radio service in French. It would cover local, regional, national and international news and public affairs.
