CRTC LOOKS AT ABORIGINAL TV

Television Northern Canada of Hull, Que. has requested a license from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for a national aboriginal TV service to be launched next fall. Called Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, the specialty channel will be a network about aboriginal people for all Canadians. The CRTC will make its decision early next year. TVNC is a non-profit organization with nine members and six associate members. It was established 20 years ago. TVNC produces programming geared to aboriginal people including children's shows, accredited and general interest educational programming, cultural and current affairs, documentaries, phone-in and community discussion programs, northern legislative and political coverage, live and special events and the activities of the indigenous people of the circumpolar world. TVNC's audience consists of about 100,000 people, over half of whom are of aboriginal ancestry.
