ULTRAMAR GOES AFTER CONVENIENCE MARKET

Ultramar Corp. of Greenwich, Connecticut is going to spend $200 million(US) over the next two years to upgrade its Canadian operations. The company is planning to add convenience stores to 450 of its 1,400 service stations from Ontario to Newfoundland. It will also upgrade 600 outlets and become the direct operator of 700 stations. The upgrading is to be completed by early 1997. Ultramar will increase its advertising at that time to promote the convenience stores. Its ads come from PALM Publicité of Montreal.
