CHILDREN HAVE BIG INFLUENCE OVER PARENTS

Children living in Asia-Pacific countries have significant influence over purchases made for the home, according to a study done by ACNielsen. Forty percent of children influence parents when it comes to buying home computers, while 30% will tell their parents what type of toothpaste to buy, 43% say what breakfast cereals to buy, 60% have influence over the kind of fruit juice a household should drink and 48% know what kind of cookies should be sitting on the cupboard shelf. Coca-Cola is the favorite drink in 11 of the 12 markets surveyed. Pepsi led in Thailand. McDonald's is the favorite restaurant in seven markets and Gameboy is the favorite game, followed by Nintendo. The latest fads in the market are body piercing in Australia, computers in China, electronic games in Hong Kong, jeans in India, stretch shorts in Indonesia and electronic games and yo-yo's in Japan. Kids in Hong Kong receive the most pocket money at $14.50(US) per week, followed by Singapore with $13.50, Australia with $11, Taiwan with $9.30, Thailand with $8 and Japan with an average pocket change of $6.70. TV is the most popular leisure activity in Asia-Pacific countries, with 64% of respondents listing it as one of their top three activities, above playing sports with friends in most countries.
