SOUTHAM REPORTS IMPROVED PROFITS

Toronto-based Southam Inc. has reported a 30% jump in profit for the quarter ending March 31. Earnings were $23.4 million, compared to $18 million during the same period last year. Quarterly revenues rose 12.4% to $295.1 million. Southam's business communication unit saw revenue rise 17% to $19.3 million. Southam owns 32 Canadian daily newspapers including the Vancouver Sun, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald. Its business communications unit is made up of U.S. publisher American Trucker, as well as several business periodicals, directories and print and electronic information services.
