MEDIA VETERAN JOHN BASSETT DIES AT 82

CFTO-TV founder John Bassett died yesterday at the age of 82. Bassett began his media career as a reporter at The Globe and Mail, then bought his father's majority stake in the Sherbrooke Daily Record newspaper in 1945. In 1948 he became advertising manager and director of the Toronto Telegram, then bought the paper in 1952. Bassett ran the paper until its demise in 1971, after which he founded CFTO-TV. Bassett has also been a director of both the Maple Leaf Gardens and the Argonaut Football Club. Bassett is survived by his wife Isabel, son Douglas and granddaughter Carling. His funeral will be held on Thursday at St. Paul's Anglican Church on Bloor St. E. at 3:30 p.m.
