NCC BATTLES B.C.'S GAG LAW
By Adnews Staff
The National Citizens' Coalition is fighting British Columbia's election gag law. The organization launched a radio campaign this week to publicize a constitutional court challenge to the law. Eventually, the campaign will use newspaper ads as well. The court case involves Vancouver accountant Garry Nixon, who spent $6,329 independently on radio and newspaper ads criticizing Glen Clark's NDP government during the last election. Nixon was found guilty for violating B.C.'s gag law, which makes it illegal for citizens to independently spend more than $5,000 to support or oppose political parties or candidates during a provincial election. The case is currently under appeal, something the B.C. government is trying to appeal. The campaign was created in-house.
