CIGARETTE MAKER COURTS YOUTH

U.S. cigarette maker Philip Morris is targeting Chinese youth with its latest campaign in Beijing. The company has launched a promotion offering Marlboro branded sportswear in return for empty packs of its cigarettes. The promotion is running in 10 large department stores in the city. The Marlboro sportswear gifts include cotton T-shirts, caps, watches and all-weather jackets. Foreign tobacco manufacturers are banned from advertising their cigarette brands on TV or in print, but do attempt to promote their products using other means. Earlier this year, BAT launched a campaign in Hangzhou to encourage local people to exchange their Chinese cigarette brands for BAT's 555 brand.
