DEPARTMENT STORE SALES ON THE RISE

Department store sales jumped almost 10% during the first six months of the year, compared to the same period in 1996, according to Statistics Canada. Sales increased to $7.45 billion and were higher in both quarters, with an 8.7% rise in the first and a 10.2% boost in the second. Most of the gain came from two chains: Sears Canada and Wal-Mart Canada. June department store sales rose .4% over May to $1.32 billion. The largest increases came from such items as home entertainment equipment, housewares and small electrical appliances, major appliances, draperies and furniture coverings and furniture. Clothing, cosmetics and toiletries sales were also up.
