By Adnews Staff
Canadian companies and other organizations are continuing to stake out their pieces of the Internet, according to an index compiled by Internet Light and Power, a Toronto-based Internet service provider. The figures show that the number of registered Internet domain names in Canada has almost doubled in the last six months. A domain name is a unique ID that often serves as a company's website or email address. As of the end of March 1997, a total of 76,098 domain names had been registered in Canada. About 39% of those are in Ontario, 31% are in B.C., 15% are in Quebec, and the rest are divided between the Prairies and the Maritimes. All the domain names in Canada put together make up about 8.4% of the world-wide total.
