STUDY SAYS SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES THRIVING

Sport utility vehicles are getting more popular, according to Scotiabank economists. During the first two months of 1997, Scotiabank's latest Canadian Auto Report says domestic sales of SUVs increased 40% over sales during the same period in 1996. Scotiabank economists are attributing the vehicles' growing popularity to the burgeoning over-40 population in Canada. The economists also claim Canada's aging population should dampen minivan sales. In the U.S., minivan sales have declined along with the size of the 30 to 39-year-old segment of the population.
