Downtown Yonge BIA conducts HerStory promotion

The Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area has begun a promotion called “HerStory” intended to highlight women who have contributed to the history of Toronto. During the promotion, large banners featuring five women will be displayed in the windows of unoccupied stores on Yonge St. The women include E. Pauline Johnson, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Verna Johnston, Jean Lumb and Salome Bey. The effort also includes a website at <http://www.toronto.ca/herstory> that provides information about each woman and her accomplishments, as well as social media content.

“We are thrilled to be putting these spaces to good use celebrating the stories of great women,” said Mark Garner, COO and executive director of the Downtown Yonge BIA. “Of course, we are eager for all of these properties to return to active retail use as we recover from the pandemic, but in the meantime this helps maintain vibrancy on Yonge Street.”
