GUELPH BEGINS CASHLESS CITY TEST

Guelph, Ont. came one step closer last week to becoming a cashless city. Mondex in Canada began testing a stored-value card there in which a cash value is stored on a computer chip on the card. When a purchase is made, the value is deducted from the card. More than 500 merchants have signed up for the test. In addition to being accepted in traditional retail locations, the card will be accepted in such places as vending machines, public transit, parking meters, pay phones, parking lots, hot dog vendors, taxi cab drivers, pizza and fast food delivery. Teaser print and radio advertising for the card began last December. Launch advertising using transit, radio and print began earlier this month. Both campaigns were created by Bozell Worldwide of Toronto. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and the Royal Bank of Canada are the owners of Mondex in Canada. Participating in the launch are Bell Canada, Credit Union Central of Canada and the City of Guelph.
