CABINET DENIES CANWEST GLOBAL APPEAL

Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communication Corp.'s attempt to have the federal cabinet overturn a TV station licensing decision by the CRTC has been brushed aside. Global appealed to the cabinet after it lost out in a bid for two Alberta broadcasting licences to Craig Broadcast Inc. of Brandon, Manitoba. Global had wanted the licences because Alberta and Quebec are the only holes in its bid to become Canada's third national broadcaster. However, the decision was not entirely negative for Global, as the cabinet directed the CRTC to examine the need for a third national broadcaster.
