Metro expands into Winnipeg, London

Commuter newspaper Metro Canada will launch new editions in Winnipeg and London, ON on April 4. The publications will be distributed by promoters and in street boxes in both cities. The eventual daily circulation will be 40,000 copies in Winnipeg and 35,000 in London. Steve Shrout, publisher of Metro Alberta, has been appointed publisher of Metro Winnipeg, while Irene Patterson, associate publisher of Metro Toronto, has been appointed publisher of Metro London. The new papers will bring the number of Canadian editions of Metro to nine, covering 77% of the country's metropolitan areas and 53% of the total population, according to the company. "It is exciting to see the demand for Metro continue to grow with both readers and advertising partners," said Bill McDonald, president and publisher, of Metro English Canada. "Our goal is to continuously improve and enhance our brand in an effort to reach the important target market of youthful, active metropolitans in every major market across Canada. Metro's expansion into Winnipeg and London is the natural next step towards achieving this goal." Metro Canada is a joint venture between Metro International and Torstar.
