TEENS RESPOND TO CIGARETTE ADS
By Adnews Staff
Teenagers are three times more responsive than adults to cigarette advertising, according to a study by Richard Pollay of the University of British Columbia. Three U.S. brands, Marlboro, Camel and Newport, capture twice as much of the teen smoking market as the adult market. The three brands use very colorful advertising. In Canada, one in three youths between the ages of 10 and 19 is a smoker. In the U.S., three million teen smokers consume nearly one billion packs a year. The study tracked 20 years of cigarette advertising until 1993.
