Report: 2008 Canadian online advertising revenue

The Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada has released a report on Canadian online advertising revenue in 2008. According to the bureau, this revenue increased by 29% to $1.6 billion during that year. The report places online ad spending at 11% of all major media ad spending in Canada, making it the third largest advertising medium after television and newspapers. According to the report, 38% of online spending went to search advertising, 31% on display advertising and 30% on classified advertising, with smaller amounts spent on video and email ads. "Even in the face of uncertain economic conditions and continued pressure on total advertising budgets, clearly online advertising has cemented itself as a mainstay in the overall media buy," said Paula Gignac, president of the bureau. "Although 2009 has presented substantial challenges to the entire Canadian marketing community, we're confident that online advertising will continue to grow at the projected pace for the simple reason that as the Internet continues to engage consumers, it matches these accomplishments with a persistent ability to deliver measurable advertiser results." The bureau projects that 2009 online ad revenues will be $1.75 billion.
