CANADIANS SUPPORT TOBACCO RESTRICTIONS

Seventy-one per cent of Canadians think tobacco companies shouldn't advertise their products, according to a study by Environics Research Group of Toronto. More than two-thirds of the respondents approve of plain packaging for tobacco products showing only the brand name and health warning, and 93% said tobacco companies should be required to list all ingredients on their packages. In addition, a strong majority of provinces support limiting tobacco sales to special outlets to which minors would have restricted access, similar to the way alcohol is sold. Ninety-four per cent of respondents said retailers should be required to ask for proof of age before selling tobacco products. Seventy-four per cent of Canadians believe the government should consider the health of Canadians as its number one priority when developing legislation related to tobacco. The study was commissioned by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and The Lung Association.
