Beer packaging roundup

Toronto-based Laker Brewing has unveiled a new design for its Laker brands. The new look is intended to convey the Canadian heritage of the brands and inform consumers that Laker is made with Canadian spring water. The new packaging design, created by Mark IV of Mississauga, consists of labels and cartons for Laker Premium Lager, Premium Light and Red. The design features a large maple leaf shape against a background of spring water. Laker Brewing is owned by Brick Brewing of Waterloo, ON.
The Columbia Brewery of Creston, BC is distributing its Kokanee brand in special packaging for a limited time in western Canada. Specially-marked 18-can cases of Kokanee will contain "Chill Check" cans that display various hidden images when they become cold enough to drink. The cans carry images of characters drawn from recent Kokanee advertising campaigns: the Ranger, the Sasquatch, the Glacier Girls or Brew the Dog. The images will appear when the cans are cooled to between 10 and three degrees Celsius. The special packaging was developed by Crown Cork & Seal. According to the brewer, this is the first time the technology has been used in the Canadian beer industry.
Labatt has introduced a new form of packaging called the Labatt Blue Cold One. The can is wrapped with a thin layer of insulation designed to keep the beer inside cold longer. The wrap, called Cool2Go, was developed by DuPont. It is intended to reduce condensation and heat transfer from hands and the outside air. According to Labatt, this is the first time the technology has been applied to beer. The special cans will be distributed for a limited time in Ontario through Beer Stores and at some bars and restaurants.
