Advertising Standards Canada released its 2004 Ad Complaints Report yesterday. The report covers consumer complaints submitted to the organization last year for review under the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. In 2004, the group received 1,540 complaints about 860 ads. Of these, 81 complaints about 55 ads were found to be in violation of the code. Alcohol ads drew 230 complaints, the most in any category. Among media, television was the highest in the complaint count, with 939. "In 2004, the dominant theme expressed in complaints submitted by consumers to ASC concerned adult-themed and suggestive advertising, particularly when it reached their children through mainstream media," said Janet Feasby, director of public affairs and communications at the organization.
