PET SUPPLY MARKET GROWING

Pet supply makers and retailers spent $58 million(US) to place advertising in 1994, according to a study by New York-based Packaged Facts. This was a 45% increase over the $40 million spent in 1993. Manufacturers accounted for 67% of 1994 ad spending. Television swallowed 59% of the ad dollars. Magazines got 25% and newspapers 10%. The U.S. retail market grew at a compound annual rate of 6.6% from 1991 to 1995. Sales reached $4 billion(US) last year, up from $3.1 billion in 1991. Sales of dog and cat products grew 41% from 1991 to 1995, climbing to over $2.7 billion last year.
