GOVERNMENT TO PROPOSE DO-NOT-CALL LIST

According to a report in the Globe & Mail, the federal government is preparing legislation that will propose the formation of a national do-not-call list for Canadian telemarketers. The legislation is expected to be introduced this week and reviewed by a parliamentary committee early next year. Telemarketers would be prohibited from called anyone who placed themselves on the list, unless a prior business relationship exists or permission to call has been granted. According to the Globe, 80 percent of Canadian find telephone solicitations intrusive and 60 percent support the creation of a do-not-call list. John Gustavson, president of the Canadian Marketing Association, was quoted in the story as saying, "Canadians are simply fed up and they want something done about it. The alternative can be much worse."
