CRTC APPROVES NINE NON-CANADIAN CHANNELS

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has approved nine new non-Canadian third-language networks for distribution by cable companies. The newly-approved channels include the Arabic-language Al Jazeera news and public affairs network, the Arabic-language movie service ART Movies, the German-language network German TV, the Spanish-language movie network CineLatino and the Romanian-language network Romanian Television International. A requirement the CRTC has imposed for broadcasters distributing Al Jazeera is that programming must be recorded and kept for a period of time to allow future assessments if any concerns about abusive comment are raised. Broadcasters can also alter or delete Al Jazeera programming so no abusive comment is distributed. Services not approved by the CRTC include Azteca 13 International, a Spanish-language network; GOL TV, a Spanish and English-language soccer network; LBC America, an Arabic-language network; TV Chile; TVE International, a Spanish-language network and RAI International, an Italian-language network. The CRTC denied these services because they compete with one or more Canadian pay or specialty services.
