MILK CARTON CAUSES BOMB SCARE
By Adnews Staff
A milk promotion bombed last weekend at The Eaton Centre in Toronto. The shopping mall was evacuated and the city's bomb squad called in when a Culture's restaurant employee discovered wires in a milk carton. Thirty-five members of the police force, fire department and ambulance service were called to the scene, and traffic was closed along portions of Queen and Yonge Streets. Police blew up the milk carton after an x-ray showed an electronic device in the container. As it turned out, the little gizmo was not explosive; it simply made "moo" sounds for a promotion from the Ontario Milk Marketing Board. The contest offers consumers chances to win cars, holidays and snowboards if they open milk cartons that moo. Despite the weekend's explosive situation, the Board will continue with the promotion for another three to four weeks, communications assistant director Bill Mitchell told Adnews yesterday. "I think that what happened was an unfortunate misunderstanding," he said. The Board has talked to police and they feel there is no reason to stop the contest because it has been publicized with advertising since it began at the beginning of October. The promo was put together by Bratch Goehrum & Partners.
