CRTC mandates streaming service contributions

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has announced that online streaming services will be required to contribute five percent of their Canadian revenues to support Canadian broadcasting beginning with the 2024-2025 broadcast year. According to the commission, these contributions will provide an estimated $200 million per year that will be used to fund local news on radio and television, French-language content, Indigenous content and content created by and for Canadians of diverse backgrounds. The new regulation is part of the Online Streaming Act, which is an amendment to the Broadcasting Act.
“Today's decision will help ensure that online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content,” said Vicky Eatrides, chairperson and CEO of the CRTC. “The CRTC will continue to move quickly, listen carefully, and take action as we implement the new legislation.”
