The Toronto chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators has named Eileen de Villa, Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto, as its Communicator of the Year for 2021. Dr. de Villa heads Toronto Public Health, Canada’s largest public health unit. She has also been the Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel. According to the association, the award recognizes her work in public communications during the COVID-19 pandemic, which have included regular local media appearances as well as social media content.
“Effective communication is key in times of uncertainty,” said Mandy Gibson, president of IABC Toronto. “People are looking for a trusted and respected voice to provide them with the information needed to move from awareness to action. Dr. de Villa has provided that voice, insight and stewardship over the pandemic and we are so delighted to recognize her communications leadership by awarding her with the prestigious Communicator of the Year Award.”
